The Most Popular Halloween Candy in Every U.S. State: As famous candy-like Twizzlers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and M&M’s take over grocery shelves in preparation for Halloween, it’s definitely the sweetest time of year. However, according to a survey by food delivery service Instacart, not all candy is equally appreciated across the country.

Classics, it turns out, have a lot of power. Peanut M&M’s and M&M’s were the most popular sweets in America in 2020, according to the firm, which accounted for more candy sold by weight on the site. Reese’s, Hershey’s, and (the occasionally contentious) Twizzlers were the next three choices. Treat corn, another divisive candy, came in at No. 8 on the list, with Mississippi residents being the most likely to purchase it.

“As soon as October begins, we notice a surge in people adding Halloween candy to their orders as a way to get in the mood for All Hallows’ Eve,” Laurentia Romaniuk, Instacart’s trends specialist, told T+L. “There’s a sentimental element to trick-or-treat candy that takes you back to your childhood and the simple pleasures of life, which is possibly why candy is so important on Halloween!”

In fact, according to a September survey of 2,000 people, more than half of Americans believe candy is more essential on Halloween than Halloween’s costumes themselves.

According to Instacart, 43% of all candy sales in October are made in the last week of the month, with October 31 being the busiest day for Halloween candy purchases (the company says they can deliver the sweet treats as fast as 30 minutes for any last-minute candy needs).

According to the site, Utah, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and Washington purchased the most candy when it comes to having a sweet tooth. North Carolina, Florida, New York, Iowa, and Connecticut, on the other hand, purchased the least amount of Halloween sweets.

Candy cravings aren’t only for kids: 53% of parents with children under the age of 18 said they would absolutely or probably steal some of their children’s candy.
