Have you exercised today? If not, you’re not alone. A new report by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Elevance Health Foundation reveals that many Americans are not getting enough exercise. But there’s one city that stands out for its fitness: Arlington, Virginia, USA.
It’s concerning that so many Americans aren’t meeting the minimum standards for physical activity. The report highlights that fewer people are engaging in the recommended 22 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per day and muscle-strengthening activities twice a week. Additionally, there’s been a decrease in the number of people getting enough sleep and an increase in those reporting poor physical and mental health. This lack of exercise and sleep can lead to chronic diseases and a decline in overall well-being.
Arlington, Virginia, offers a shining example of how a community can foster a healthier lifestyle. For the fifth consecutive year, Arlington has been named the fittest city in the nation by the ACSM’s American Fitness Index. Here’s why:
Why Arlington Tops the Fitness Rankings?
- High Exercise Rates: 87.8% of residents reported exercising in the previous month, the highest rate in the country.
- Ample Sleep: 76.4% of residents get seven or more hours of sleep per night, more than any other city.
- Low Smoking Rates: Only 3.4% of residents smoke, the lowest percentage in the U.S.
Community and Environmental Factors
1. Top-Ranked Public Parks
- Arlington’s public parks system ranks fifth nationwide based on size, access, investment, amenities, and equity. According to the Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore.
- 99% of residents live within ten minutes of a park.
2. Variety of Recreational Facilities
- The city boasts numerous basketball hoops, splash pads, and dog parks, promoting an active lifestyle for all ages.

The Bigger Picture
Despite these successes, the report reveals a broader issue: many Americans are not as active as they should be. ACSM President Stella Volpe urges local leaders to invest in infrastructure and make policy decisions that promote physical activity and health.
