A Summer to Remember: Torquay, 1972

In the summer of 1972, four 17-year-olds—Marion Banforth, Susan Morris, Mary Helliwell, and Carol Asbro—packed their bags for their first trip without parents. Leaving Halifax behind, they traveled to Torquay, eager for a week of freedom.

The group stayed in a caravan on a modest campsite, but to them, it was paradise. Mary recalls how the small outdoor pool felt like a luxury:

“It was only a small pool, but I was absolutely made up. It was such a simpler time!”

During their days on the beach and evenings sipping cider, a chance encounter led to a moment they would never forget. A photographer on the promenade asked them to link arms and pose for a snapshot. That black-and-white photo, with their carefree smiles and vibrant outfits, would become the ultimate keepsake of their adventure.

52 Years Later: A Reunion in Torquay

In 2024, Susan suggested recreating the iconic photo. Initially, her friends were hesitant.

“They dropped their knives and forks when I mentioned it,” Susan laughed. “But eventually, they came around, and we had the best time!”

The logistics weren’t easy. The white hotel in the original background had been demolished, making it tricky to locate the exact spot. Then came the challenge of finding outfits that matched their 1970s style. With a little creativity and help from charity shops, they managed to recreate their looks, even if some outfits were a bit snug.

Mary shared:

“It took two friends to zip me into my dress! But once we got to the promenade, it was all worth it. Everyone was watching, and we couldn’t stop laughing!”
