Renewing your passport can be a hassle with all the paperwork and trips to the post office.
The traditional renewal process is time-consuming and inconvenient, especially if you have a busy schedule or upcoming travel plans.
Great news! The State Department has launched a new online passport renewal program, making the process as easy as a few clicks.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Eligibility:
- You must currently live in the United States.
- Your passport should have been issued between 2009 and 2015.
- Online renewal is not available if you need to change your name or date of birth.
- You’ll need to upload your own photo.
- Important Note:
- Once you submit your online application, your current passport will be immediately canceled. If you have international travel plans soon, you should wait to apply.
- You don’t need to mail in your existing passport.
- Cost:
- Renewing online costs $130, payable by credit card only.
- Processing Time:
- Routine service takes 6-8 weeks, not including mailing time, so it might take a bit longer.
- There’s no option for expedited or urgent travel in this online test phase.
If you need your passport urgently, you should make an appointment at a passport center.
The State Department has also provided a digital guide with helpful videos to explain the process step-by-step. For those applying for a passport for the first time, there are “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” being held at various locations this summer.
So, if you meet the criteria and don’t have immediate travel plans, renewing your passport online could save you a lot of time and hassle. Check out the State Department’s website for more details and to start your renewal process today!
