PortMiami Parking, Hotels and Transportation: Complete 2026 Guide

The first time I studied a PortMiami map, one thing became clear very quickly.

Knowing that your cruise leaves from “Miami” is not enough.

PortMiami has terminals on two sides of Dodge Island. Arriving at the wrong one can mean extra driving, more walking and a stressful start to your vacation.

This guide explains where to go, what official parking costs and how to travel from Miami or Fort Lauderdale airports.

✅ Where PortMiami Is Located

PortMiami sits on Dodge Island, beside downtown Miami and Biscayne Bay.

The port is connected to the mainland by a bridge and a toll-free vehicle tunnel.

Do not use only “PortMiami” as your destination without checking the terminal.

Use the exact cruise-terminal address shown in your cruise documents.

✅ Confirming the Correct Cruise Terminal

Never choose your terminal based only on an old blog, social media post or a previous cruise.

Terminal assignments can change.

Start with your cruise line’s app, boarding pass or electronic cruise documents.

Norwegian Cruise Line, for example, tells passengers that the terminal name can be confirmed on their eDocs.

You can also check PortMiami’s Daily Dock Report, which shows ships scheduled at the port within a selected date range.

I would check three times:

1. When completing online check-in.
2. The evening before the cruise.
3. Before leaving the hotel or airport.

When entering the destination in a rideshare app, compare the terminal letter and street address with your boarding documents.

Do not assume your driver automatically knows where your ship is docked.

Parking cannot generally be reserved through PortMiami, although the privately managed terminal garages may offer their own reservation systems.

✅ Current Garage and Long-Term Parking Rates

Parking prices are not identical across PortMiami.

Some cruise-line garages charge more than the standard county-managed facilities.

Garage A’s operator currently lists cruise parking at $35 per night on the Royal Miami Parking website.

Garage B parking is $35 per vehicle, per space, per day. The official PortMiami page directs Norwegian passengers to its ParkWhiz reservation system.

The regular long-term rate for Garages C, D and G—and the parking category that includes Terminal F—is $25 per day or fraction.

🔹 Oversized vehicles

Surface Lot E can accommodate oversized vans, recreational vehicles and trailers.

The published cost is $25 per occupied space per day.

If your vehicle uses two spaces, the cost becomes $50 per day.

🔹 Payment rules

PortMiami’s county parking page lists these accepted methods:

• Cash
• Visa
• Mastercard
• American Express
• Discover
• Major U.S. traveler’s checks

The same page says debit cards are not accepted.

Parking users normally pay when leaving.

Because outside operators manage some garages, check that facility’s payment and reservation rules separately.

🔹 How parking days are counted

Most county rates are charged per day or part of a day.

That means the number of charged parking days may not match the number of nights printed on your cruise itinerary.

Do not calculate your total by multiplying the advertised cruise nights without checking the operator’s billing method.

✅ MIA to PortMiami Transportation Options

Miami International Airport is the closest major airport.

PortMiami lists MIA as approximately 7.1 miles from the port.

🔹 Rideshare

Uber, Lyft and other ride-app pickups are available on MIA’s arrivals level outside baggage claim.

This is usually the simplest choice for two or more travelers with luggage.

The price changes with traffic, demand, vehicle size and the time of day.

Check the app after collecting your bags rather than relying on an old online price.

🔹 Taxi

Taxis are available on the arrivals level outside baggage claim.

Reservations are not normally required for a taxi leaving MIA.

The final fare can vary, so check the airport’s posted taxi information before riding.

🔹 Cruise-line transfer

Many cruise lines sell airport-to-port transportation.

This must usually be booked in advance and may operate only within approved flight-arrival windows.

For example, Carnival says a flight must arrive before 11:00 a.m. to qualify for its same-day airport-to-pier transfer.

Your cruise line’s rules may be different.

🔹 Public transportation

A lower-cost route is possible, but it requires several steps.

PortMiami’s official directions describe this route:

1. Take the MIA Mover to the Miami Intermodal Center.
2. Take the Orange Line Metrorail to Government Center.
3. Transfer to Metromover.
4. Exit near Freedom Tower.
5. Connect with the free Coral Way Trolley to PortMiami.

The trolley has stops near Terminal J, Surface Lot E and the PortMiami administration area.

This route can save money, but it is less convenient with large suitcases, small children or limited mobility.

Always use the current Miami-Dade Transit trip planner because routes and service conditions can change.

✅ FLL to PortMiami Transportation Options

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is approximately 25.7 miles from PortMiami.

FLL says the drive takes about 45 minutes without traffic.

The airport recommends allowing at least 90 minutes, especially during busy morning or evening periods.

🔹 Rideshare

Rideshare is normally the easiest direct option from FLL.

Follow the airport signs to the approved pickup area after collecting your luggage.

The price can rise during busy cruise weekends, bad weather and high-demand periods.

🔹 Taxi

FLL’s official cruise-passenger guide estimates a taxi from FLL to PortMiami at about $67.

That is an estimate, not a guaranteed flat fare.

Broward County says taxis can carry up to five people for the amount shown on the meter and accept credit cards.

🔹 Cruise-line or private shuttle

A cruise-line transfer may be useful for solo travelers or anyone who wants a clearly arranged pickup.

It must normally be reserved before arrival.

Private shared or group shuttles are also available through permitted transportation companies.

Compare the total group price—not only the advertised per-person price—with the cost of a rideshare.

🔹 Tri-Rail

Tri-Rail does not travel directly to PortMiami.

FLL provides a free airport shuttle to its nearby Tri-Rail station.

After riding south, passengers still need another connection—usually a taxi or rideshare—to reach the cruise terminal.

This can cost less, but it includes multiple transfers.

It is usually better for light travelers with enough time than for a family carrying several large bags.

✅ Which Hotel Location Is Best?

There is no single best hotel for every cruise passenger.

The right area depends on your airport, arrival time, budget and plans before boarding.

🔹 Downtown Miami or Biscayne Bay

Best for: Being close to PortMiami.

Downtown places you near the bridge leading to the port.

It can be convenient for a short rideshare on embarkation morning and for visiting Bayside or downtown attractions.

Waterfront rooms may be expensive, and a hotel that looks close across the water may not offer a free port shuttle.

🔹 Brickell

Best for: Restaurants, nightlife and an extra Miami evening.

Brickell has many hotels and dining choices south of downtown.

It is convenient for travelers who want more than an airport overnight.

Traffic can still affect the trip to the port.

🔹 Miami International Airport area

Best for: Late flights and lower-stress airport access.

An airport-area hotel can be practical after an evening arrival.

Some provide airport shuttles, but that does not mean they also provide PortMiami transportation.

Confirm both services separately.

🔹 Miami Beach

Best for: Travelers adding a beach stay.

Miami Beach can turn one pre-cruise night into part of the vacation.

However, it is across the water from the cruise port, and traffic can make embarkation-morning travel less predictable.

🔹 Fort Lauderdale or FLL airport area

Best for: Very late FLL arrivals.

After a late flight, staying near FLL may be easier than traveling to Miami that night.

The tradeoff is a longer drive on cruise morning.

Give yourself a large traffic buffer.

✅ Same-Day Versus Previous-Day Arrival

If I had to choose, I would arrive at least one day before the cruise.

A hotel costs money, but a delayed flight on cruise morning can cost much more.

Royal Caribbean notes that many travelers find it easier to arrive a day early because passengers who miss departure may be responsible for reaching the ship at another port.

Norwegian went further in 2026.

Effective January 26, 2026, guests buying air travel through NCL are required to arrive at least one day before sailing.

🔹 When same-day arrival may work

Same-day travel carries less risk when:

• You have a very early nonstop flight.
• The airport is MIA rather than FLL.
• Your airline offers several backup flights.
• Your cruise-line transfer accepts your arrival time.
• You have no checked luggage delay.
• Weather and traffic conditions are favorable.

Even then, no plan can remove all risk.

🔹 Arriving the previous day is strongly preferable

Come at least one day early if:

• Your flight has a connection.
• You are traveling during hurricane or winter-weather season.
• You are flying from outside the United States.
• You are traveling with children or older relatives.
• You use mobility equipment.
• Missing the ship would create major financial hardship.
• Your flight lands at FLL later in the day.

✅ Luggage and Family Considerations

Traveling with four people and eight bags is very different from traveling alone with a backpack.

🔹 Choose the right vehicle size

Do not assume a standard rideshare can hold your full group and all its luggage.

Count checked suitcases, carry-ons, strollers, wheelchairs and medical equipment before choosing a vehicle.

A larger vehicle may cost more but prevent a canceled pickup or unsafe loading.

🔹 Keep essential items with you

Do not place passports, medicines, cruise documents, valuables or necessary medical equipment inside luggage handed to a porter.

Keep those items in a personal bag that stays with you.

🔹 Attach cruise luggage tags

Download and attach the luggage tags supplied by your cruise line.

Make sure the passenger name, ship and stateroom information can be read.

🔹 Bring required child seats

FLL specifically warns families that the airport, airlines and transportation companies do not supply child safety seats.

If your child needs one, arrange an appropriate vehicle and bring the required seat.

Do not assume a taxi, shuttle or rideshare driver will provide it.

🔹 Public transit with children

Metrorail and Metromover may save money, but transfers can become difficult with toddlers, strollers and several suitcases.

Price matters, but convenience and safety matter too.

✅ Accessible Transportation and Parking

Every PortMiami garage has designated parking spaces for vehicles displaying disabled permits.

A disabled parking permit alone does not normally provide free long-term cruise parking.

PortMiami provides two complimentary hours for vehicles displaying an eligible disabled permit or license tag.

Free parking is limited to qualifying situations under Florida law, including certain vehicles with:

• Ramps or lifts
• Foot or hand controls
• A qualifying Florida disabled-veteran license plate
• A Florida Toll Exemption permit

A qualifying disabled veteran must be in the vehicle when it is parked.

When leaving, the driver may need to show the parking ticket, driver’s license and vehicle registration.

🔹 Accessible taxis

Miami-Dade offers wheelchair-accessible taxis with trained drivers.

The county says wheelchair users are not charged an additional accessibility surcharge.

🔹 Cruise-line assistance

Contact your cruise line before sailing if you need:

• Wheelchair assistance
• An accessible shuttle
• Help boarding
• Mobility-equipment handling
• Service-animal guidance
• A sign-language or communication accommodation
